The benefit of forward chaining is that the youngster gets to show competence from the start before needing to ask for assistance.  S/he can go home and say "Look what I learned." and start to show part of the skill before the parents or guardians help out and teach some.

The benefit of backward chaining is that the youngster gets to complete the task, perhaps better seeing the connection between his/her performance and the final product.

The benefit of total chaining is that the youngster is an active participant in all parts of the activity.
